Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday endorsed California Democrat Adam Schiff in the 2024 US Senate election, currently held by Diane Feinstein.

But Pelosi said the approval would only apply if Feinstein, who is 89 and the oldest senator, chooses not to run for re-election.

Pelosi, 82, who resigned in November after Republicans won the House majority in November’s midterm elections, said if Feinstein were to run for the next term, “She has my full support.” ” he said.

A spokesperson for Feinstein’s office did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on Pelosi’s testimony. In a statement released Thursday morning when Senator Schiff’s campaign was announced, Pelosi said, “If she decides not to run, I know very well the link between a strong democracy and a strong economy. I endorse House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, who has

“During his time in the House, he has focused on strengthening democracy through justice and building an economy that works for all,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi said his 62-year-old Schiff, who ran for Congress in 2000, has devoted his life to his public service. “Each time I have asked Adam to take on the difficult battle against extremist forces, he has responded with integrity, strength, and success.

The approval comes a week after Schiff, the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, submitted Feinstein’s candidacy for the coveted Senate seat. His announcement saw him as an anti-Republican militant, playing his unique role as the chief impeachment manager in the first Senate trial of former President Donald Trump. Pelosi handpicked him for the role, ending with Trump’s acquittal by the Republican-led Senate.

“You don’t stop. We have to stop them. That’s why I’m running for the United States Senate,” Schiff said in the campaign opening video.

Feinstein, meanwhile, has yet to say whether he will run again or retire at the end of his term. Her Senate campaign received little money in the last few months of last year, recent campaign documents show.

Schiff wasn’t the first Democrat to run for Feinstein’s seat. Democratic Rep. Katie Porter resigned in January. She will run for California Senate and endorse D-Mass Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Pelosi’s announcement through Schiff’s campaign began with a generous admiration for Feinstein and her long political career.

“Since being elected to the Senate in 1992, Senator Feinstein has had an amazing legislative record, staying true to her vows to always fight for, defend, and defend the state of California,” Pelosi said. She cited her work for Feinstein on the Assault Weapons Prohibition Act of 1994, the Violence Against Women Act, the Respect for Marriage Act, and others.

“America is at a turning point. “We have a choice: Let Republicans roll back our accomplishments, undermine our freedoms, and give tax breaks to the affluent special interests. Or, we can keep improving our communities, bolstering our economy, and defending our democracy. “The battle for America’s future is on the ballot in 2024.”
